Final expense & life insurance

One less thing for your family to carry.

Final expense insurance is typically a smaller whole life policy intended to help loved ones with funeral costs and other expenses. We explain premiums, eligibility and any waiting period so you know what a policy would cover.

What it actually costs to say goodbye

Costs depend on the arrangements you choose. Ask local providers for itemized prices for burial or cremation, services, transportation and cemetery expenses. Then consider other amounts you want to leave for loved ones, along with any savings or existing insurance. The right coverage amount should fit both your goals and a premium you can keep paying.

How these policies differ from term life

  • Permanent. Whole life is designed to last for life while required premiums are paid and the policy remains in force. Term insurance covers a specified period; expiration and renewal terms vary.
  • Fixed premium. Whole life policies generally have level premiums. The price depends on factors such as age, health, coverage amount and insurer.
  • Simplified underwriting. Some policies use health questions without a medical exam. Guaranteed-issue policies may limit benefits for death from natural causes during an initial period; the length and benefit depend on the policy.
  • Benefits for your beneficiary. An approved claim pays according to the policy terms. Timing depends on required documents and any claim review. Beneficiary designations, policy loans and exclusions can affect payment.

Questions we answer every week

  • Do I need this if I already have life insurance through a former employer?
  • How much coverage is enough, and how do I keep the premium affordable on a fixed income?
  • Can I get a policy with diabetes, COPD or a past heart problem?
  • Should I pre-pay the funeral home instead?
  • Who should be the beneficiary, and what happens if they pass first?
  • Can I leave something for grandchildren too?

Being independent matters most here

Insurers differ in how they evaluate health conditions and price coverage. We compare available options from the companies we represent and explain any graded benefits or exclusions. The insurer makes the final underwriting decision; a quote is not a guarantee of approval.
